This past week, our students have been engaging in a fun and meaningful learning activity focused on making choices between two items. After deciding on their favorite, each child wrote their name on the board to cast their “vote.” While this may look like a simple classroom routine, it actually supports several important early childhood learning goals.
First, this activity provides repeated practice with name writing, helping children strengthen fine motor skills, letter formation, and confidence in recognizing and writing their own names.
Second, students are being introduced to foundational concepts in data collection and representation. By placing their names under the item they prefer, they are learning how information can be organized using simple charts. As a class, we even extended this work by taking the information from one of our charts and creating a graph, helping students make connections between real-world choices and early mathematical thinking.
In addition to our charting activities, we’re excited to share that our classroom turkey is proudly displayed on our doors! Each feather was decorated by a student and their family, creating a collaborative piece that represents both our classroom community and the support students receive from home. We love finding opportunities to include families in our learning environment, and this project has been a wonderful reflection of that partnership.
