This trimester in Early Learners, our class theme is βAll About Our Backyard.β We have been exploring the many interesting things we can find right outside our doors. Looking closely at nature helps students develop curiosity, observation skills, and a deeper appreciation for the world around them.
Over the next few weeks, we are focusing on rocks and minerals. Students have had the opportunity to observe and explore many different types of rocks, including geodes and even crystals. Students are learning how to carefully look at these natural objects and talk about what they notice. Together, we practice describing rocks by discussing their color, shape, texture, and size, as well as thinking about what rocks can be used for in our everyday lives.
Our STEM center has also been busy with hands-on discovery. Students are exploring the concepts of heavy and light using a balance scale. This allows them to compare objects and make predictions about which items might weigh more or less.
To support this exploration, we have provided a variety of materials. Students can place items such as rocks and wooden objects on the scale to explore heavier items. They can also compare these to lighter materials like feathers, pinecones, and pom-poms. Through this activity, students are learning to observe, test ideas, and make comparisons in a fun and meaningful way.

In our sensory center, students are exploring rocks and water together. They are practicing using pipettes to move water, which helps strengthen fine motor skills and hand control. Students also have access to a variety of materials such as pom-poms and buttons that they can add to their play. These open-ended materials encourage imagination and creativity as students create their own ideas and stories during sensory exploration.

Hands-on experiences like these help students build early science and math skills while encouraging them to ask questions and explore their surroundings. We are excited to continue discovering all the amazing things that can be found right in our own backyard! πΏπͺ¨π
