Tuesday Feb. 6th in Early Learners

Kk is our letter of the week.   There are so many wonderful words, animals, things that begin with Kk.  Our focus will be learning about Koala’s and Kangaroos!  These very interesting and unusual animals are favorites among young children.  Children love Koalas because they look so cuddly and cute.  This week they will learn that Koalas are nocturnal animals, sleeping mostly during the day.  They actually sleep most of the day – Up to 18-20 hours!  They are often called Koala Bears.  They are not bears.  They are marsupials.  Their young are born immature and develop further in their mothers pouch.

The Kangaroo is another fascinating animal.  From the same region as the Koala (Australia) and is also marsupial.  The Kangaroo is a large animal weighing up to 200 pounds and stand 8 feet tall.  They hop and use their legs to kick if necessary!  Our young students love watching these animals and learning about these amazing creatures!

Today we turned our attention, not on Koalas and Kangaroos but on Kites!  Our Early Learners learned  about how and why a kite can fly.  Kites are affected by wind.  When a kite flies, it overcomes the force of gravity.   They each cut out a diamond shape from colorful paper, bows to attach to yarn and made beautiful kites!  When finished, I played the song, ‘Let’s Go Fly A Kite’ from the movie, ‘Mary Poppins’.  This group of children loved that song!  We played it a couple of times while they ran and danced around the room and they kept singing it all through recess and lunch!

Yesterday we had another great visit from our Raven Buddies.  This is already becoming a highlight of their week!  They are becoming increasingly more comfortable around our upper school students and are so excited every time they see them.
