Commotion in the Ocean

Our last theme of the year for Early Learners Yellow is Ocean, integrated with movement and dance. We will be exploring the ocean, its inhabitants, and using music to represent the vastness and power of the sea.

We have created a beach in the dramatic play area. It provides a sensory-rich environment that encourages children to explore different textures and engage in open-ended play, while also supporting language and literacy development through pretend scenarios and discussions.

Here’s a more detailed look:
1. Fostering Imagination and Creativity:
  • The beach theme offers a wide array of possibilities for children to imagine themselves as beachgoers, lifeguards, or even marine creatures.
  • Children can create imaginary sea creatures, or act out various beach-related scenarios, stimulating their creativity and imagination.

2. Promoting Social and Emotional Development:

  • Beach play often encourages cooperation and sharing, as children work together to build structures or play games.
  • It provides opportunities for children to negotiate roles and solve problems collaboratively, fostering  social skills like sharing, cooperation, and conflict resolution.
3. Enhancing Cognitive and Fine Motor Skills:
  • Sand and water play, in the sensory table, offers a variety of sensory experiences that help children develop their sensory perception and fine motor skills.
  • Pouring, scooping, and digging with sand strengthens hand-eye coordination and builds fine motor muscles.
  • Pretending to be lifeguards, beachgoers, or even sea creatures helps children develop their imagination and critical thinking skills. They can also explore math concepts like counting sand or measuring water.

4. Literacy Skills:

  • Reading books about the beach or ocean can spark interest in literacy, and creating “beach maps” or “treasure maps” further supports emergent literacy skills.
  • Beach play provides natural opportunities for children to discuss their experiences, describe their creations, and learn new vocabulary related to the beach.
In essence, creating a beach in the dramatic play area provides a fun and engaging environment that supports a wide range of developmental areas for preschoolers.
The students were excited to explore and classify a huge variety of sea shells. They were able to match the shells to a picture in the book and find out what kind of animal used to live in each shell. They were fascinated how the animals were able to move and grow out of their shells and found new shell homes. This hands-on learning promotes a sense of environmental awareness and a respect for the delicate balance of our planet.

The students especially enjoyed “Listening to the ocean waves”.

We continue to study the wonderful books of our Author of the Month, Laura Numeroff.

Early Learners Yellow are excited for the upcoming Grandfriends Day event, scheduled for:

Tuesday, April 29, 2025 from 9:00-11:30 a.m.

This special event is a cherished tradition at The Summit, allowing students to share a glimpse of their school life with the loved ones who support and cheer them on.

They had a group rehearsal, with our terrific music teacher, Mrs. Taylor, to prepare for the upcoming event.

Enjoy your weekend ~ Mrs. Murphy
