All About Transportation and Logistics

Today, our Discovery lesson was centered around the book Special Delivery: A Book’s Journey Around the World. This story reveals the process of transporting a book from its origin in China to its delivery in the United States. Before diving into the story, students grabbed their jackets and gloves to begin an investigation of their own. They examined the labels on their clothing to discover where each garment was made, sparking curiosity about global manufacturing and distribution.

As we read, students were fascinated by the shipping process. From factories to cargo ships crossing the ocean, and ending with the delivery trucks that bring the book to local stores, the narrative provided a look at the logistics behind the scenes, and the different types of transportation required to move goods from one place to another.

After reading, students participated in a scavenger hunt to find items around the classroom and list their countries of origin. This activity not only made the story come alive but also encouraged students to think about the global supply chain and how everyday items reach us.

To wrap up the lesson, students wrote a letter to someone in their family. Inspired by Jay, the main character in the story, who delivered a thank you letter to his grandmother for gifting him the book, the students are preparing to make their own special deliveries.

Overall, today’s lesson was a blend of storytelling, discovery, and personal reflection. It taught us about global trade and the simple joy of sending and receiving messages of gratitude.
