Read Across America Day, also known as Dr. Seuss Day, is usually celebrated on the birthday of the beloved author Theodor Seuss Geisel. Each year, on this day, students gather to recognize the nation’s diverse readers. At the Summit, every classroom participates in various activities, read-alouds, and crafts centered around Dr. Seuss and his engaging stories.
In our classroom, we started our day by watching a video about Dr. Seuss. We learned about his journey to becoming an author, the inspirations behind his work, and his lasting legacy. After the video, the students engaged in a brain break called “Simon Says Dr. Seuss Addition.” During this interactive segment, the students recognized many Dr. Seuss characters while dancing and having fun.
Later in the day, the kindergarteners crafted rhyming “Cat in the Hat” hats during stations. As you may know, The Cat in the Hat is an all-time classic by Dr. Seuss. Each hat the students made included rhyming words inspired by another classic Dr. Seuss story, Hop on Pop. Furthermore, the students were able to explore and read many other Dr. Seuss books with the 5th graders!
Students also completed a sheet that said “I will….” and the students had to explain what they would want to be, what they would want to learn, what they would want to try, and where they would go in the future to follow the book Oh The Places You’ll Go. These turned out so cute and are hanging up in our classroom!
A math activity the students participated in was what I like to call “Green Eggs and Math!” This game drew inspiration from the famous story Green Eggs and Ham. Each green egg represented a unique number using a variety of strategies, allowing the students to explore number sense further. For example, one egg might have five stars to represent the number 5, while another might show five tally marks. The students then went beyond number sense to create their own number sentences based on their understanding of these strategies and numbers. We had a fun and exciting day celebrating a children’s book legend while incorporating both math and reading!
