As we continue our study of weather, first grade students are investigating clouds. We have learned that clouds form when warm air and cold air meet. They are defined by they way they look as well as where they are found in the atmosphere. The three main groups of clouds are with the stratus, cumulus, and cirrus. Books such as The Cloud Book by Tomie dePaola have served to guide classroom discussions.
Other literature connections including fictional stories such as Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs will provide the opportunity to practice reading comprehension skills and written responses, while inspiring related projects and activities.
We look forward to putting our observation skills to work, as first graders will begin tracking clouds, much like they have the daily highs and lows. Students will determine the type of clouds they see, draw pictures of those clouds, and label them. They will also record the color of the clouds, the number of clouds, and any precipitation. We look forward to creating cloud books and conducting cloud related experiments.
Check out the photos below of today’s cloud activities, making and reading pop-up books and practicing our spelling words in the “clouds.”
