Ordinal Numbers

First grade students are learning that ordinal numbers tell positions.  Introducing ordinal numbers, we enjoyed the shared read aloud Ten Little Caterpillars.  Working with ordinal numbers, students will be asked to sequence numbers and objects, write and spell ordinal number words correctly, and practice directionality. Centers will incorporate cutting, sorting, gluing, and matching ordinal numbers.  Students will play games with ordinal numbers such as bingo and complete problem solving activities.  Solving word problems with ordinal numbers, students will practice reading steps carefully and accurately.  They will be asked to apply problem solving strategies by drawing and labeling pictures.
