This week, first graders are studying South America and rainforest habitats. Today, we learned about one very neat rainforest animal and its adaptations, the chameleon! As many people know, chameleons can change the color of their skin. They change their color to communicate with other chameleons, warm or cool themselves, or attract mates. Check out this video to learn more about how and why chameleons change color!
To put their adaptation skills to the test, first graders got to create their own chameleon. We used tissue paper squares to create a colorful background for our chameleons to blend into. Next, students had to play close attention to their chameleon’s “surroundings” to help it blend in. Check out some student art below!

After learning all about mammals, first graders are now learning about amphibians. We have discovered that amphibians have each of the following characteristics: vertebrates cold-blooded
