Little Ants, Big Opinions!

This week, our second graders are preparing to become opinion writers—with a bit of help from some tiny teachers! We read Hey, Little Ant by Phillip and Hannah Hoose, a story that asks one very big question: Should the boy squish the ant?

As we read, our classroom was buzzing with lively debate! Students actively shared their opinions and backed them up with reasons. Some argued to let the ant go free, while others thought the boy should stand his ground. Everyone learned that strong writing means explaining why you believe what you believe.

Then came our favorite part—our special guests arrived… an ant farm! Watching real ants at work made the story come to life. Students observed teamwork, persistence, and problem-solving in action. Suddenly, those ants weren’t just characters—they were hardworking heroes!

From reading and reasoning to real-life inspiration, our little writers discovered that even the smallest voices can make a big difference.
