Forensic Science- Dactylography

We learned about Dactyloscopy or Dactylography (the study of fingerprints) during Project Lab. We used Model Magic to make a fingerprint model to look at and examine.  We then took flour to make a more visible print to study.  Our final activity was to use an ink pad to make a copy of each of our fingerprints.  Students used a guide to discover and label the different patterns they found.  Third grade students shared their findings with one another.  They thought it was really cool that even identical twins have their own unique prints.

Interesting Facts About Fingerprints

Your fingerprints are a way to prove that you are who you say you are.  They are recorded as a form of identification and can even unlock your smartphone today.  Did you know that your fingerprints were formed before you were born?

Do you know why we have fingerprints? It’s actually a way for our fingers and hand to be able to grab onto things. The small ridges of the skin help to keep objects from slipping away when they are grabbed.
