Not by the Hair of our Chinny-Chin-Chins!

On Friday we started a STEM challenge. We started by reading the book “The True Story of the Three Little Pigs.” We used our 5 finger retell to retell the important parts of the story as well as the problem and solution. Then they were given their challenge. They had to create a house using toothpicks, straws, paper plate, foam paper, tape, and popsicle sticks. This house had to withstand the Wolf’s sneezes. In this case the houses had to withstand my hair dryer!

The students were put into groups and had to come up with different plans that they would like to create. After the students came up with their blue prints they began to build their houses. After finishing up their houses this morning, each house looked very sturdy!  Every group had

Using the hair dryer, we tested each house. We started out low and then put it on high. Not a single house blew apart! One group’s didn’t even move with all the wind! The third graders used great engineering and ingenuity to solve the challenge!
