Hopping into Spelling Patterns!

In third grade we are using Words Their Way! This program helps students learn various spelling patterns. This week we are focusing on the different sounds of “a” and different ways to spell words using the long and short a. In class we decided to get all of our muscles moving (including our brains!) and play a game. Students had to determine the pattern the word was using, or if it was an oddball and didn’t belong anywhere! Using different types of movement (hopping on one foot, frog hopping, bear walking, crab walking, etc) student moved around the room to sort the words! We sorted words like fan, pain, was, and lake! The third graders were able to explain why the words were sorted where they were!
