The first two days of school are all about helping students feel welcomed, comfortable, and confident in their new learning environment. We focus on building routines, practicing procedures, and beginning to form a strong classroom community. Here’s a peek at what we have done today and will do tomorrow.
Morning Arrival
Students will be greeted at the door and shown where to hang up their belongings. Once they settle into their seats, they’ll have a calm activity to start the day such as coloring, a word search, or a simple warm-up task. This helps everyone ease into the morning while I take attendance and get the day started.
Establishing Classroom Procedures
Early in the year, we spend time going over how our classroom works. This includes:
-
How to enter and exit the classroom
-
Walking in the hallways
-
Lining up and transitioning between activities
-
Using classroom supplies respectfully
-
Snack and lunch expectations
Students will also practice routines for things like sharpening pencils, getting drinks, and packing up at the end of the day. This foundation makes our days run smoothly for the rest of the year.
Specials & Transitions
We begin attending specials classes such as Spanish, P.E., Art, Yoga, Music, and STEM right away. These first days are a great opportunity for students to practice moving through the school calmly and respectfully.
Team-Building & Getting to Know Each Other
The start of school is a perfect time for students to continue to build friendships and work together. We’ll play cooperative games, and share “All About Me” activities. Tomorrow students may bring a bag filled with 5 items that describe them to share with the class.
Brain Breaks & Movement
We know young learners need time to move and reset their brains. Throughout the day, we’ll take short breaks for stretching, games, or mindful breathing exercises to help students stay focused and energized.
Lunch & Recess
Students will eat lunch together, followed by recess to get some fresh air and play. We’ll practice expectations for eating respectfully and playing safely.
Building Our Classroom Community
One of our first activities is creating our classroom agreements together. Students will brainstorm the kind of learning environment they want and help write the shared expectations that we’ll use all year.
Technology Introductions
Students will be introduced to their Chromebooks and begin learning about safe, responsible technology use. We’ll go over logging in, accessing Google Classroom, and using approved learning programs.
Closing the Day
Before dismissal, students will help tidy the classroom and review end-of-day routines. We’ll make sure backpacks are packed and everyone knows where they’re going at dismissal.
Our goal during these first days is to set the tone for a safe, respectful, and engaging school year. By the end of the week, students will already be familiar with our routines, have met new friends, and feel ready to dive into learning!
