Week of 4/24-4/28

Looking forward to a special Friday: Native Garden Day!  In the meantime, here’s what the 5th grade is up to:

Writing: Finishing up their “Best Part of Me” writing project.  Students have the choice of writing a 5 paragraph essay or a poem in the style of Karma Wilson’s Bear series.

Reading: Continuing reading Johnny Tremain.  There’s lots to learn from this book!  We will be focused on the history and vocabulary we can glean from the text.

Spelling/Grammar: We are spending a week focused on the vocabulary we find in Johnny Tremain.

Science: Fifth graders are really getting into their final science project of the year.  They are using their knowledge of the classification system and their research on a biome and several animal species to design a wing of a zoo.

Social Studies: We are beginning to make the pieces that will make up our museum wall on the 13 British colonies.  Maps, timelines, and charts will take shape this week.

Math: We are learning a few last geometry concepts: how to calculate angles within shapes and measuring angles using protractors.  Then, fifth graders will complete this unit with a math check on Thursday.
