This week in language study, we have been learning about Greek and Latin word parts. We have been identifying how word parts like “tele” (Greek meaning far) and “scope” (Greek meaning to observe) come together to make the word “telescope” – an instrument for seeing far.
Given lots of Greek and Latin word parts, along with common prefixes and suffixes that we have been studying this year, students have been making their own combinations to make words that don’t actually exist. Some ideas for nonsense words that maybe should be words….
- hexaform – to make a shape with 6 sides
- quadspect – to see 4 of the same shape
- subform – a rock formation underground
- telespect – to watch something from far away
- demiport – can only be carried a little
Working with these word parts help students to dissect, decipher, and interpret new words they haven’t encountered before. Fifth graders have enjoyed adding to the graffiti wall and playing around to make up new words.
