Our 4th and 5th grade Spanish classes just wrapped up an in-depth study of Paraguay, and they learned some fascinating things about this often-overlooked South American country. Over the trimester, students explored Paraguay’s geography, history, culture, and language while practicing Spanish in meaningful contexts. Here are some of the coolest facts that captured their attention:
⭐ Fun Facts About Paraguay ⭐
– Paraguay is one of only two landlocked countries in South America (along with Bolivia), yet it’s surrounded by three major rivers, including the mighty Paraná River.
– Guaraní is an official language alongside Spanish—making Paraguay one of the few countries where an Indigenous language holds equal status. Many Paraguayans are bilingual in both languages.
– The Itaipú Dam, shared with Brazil, is one of the world’s largest hydroelectric facilities and supplies electricity to both countries.
– Paraguay has no active volcanoes or earthquakes, making it one of the most geologically stable countries in South America.
– The country is incredibly biodiverse, home to jaguars, giant anteaters, capybaras, and thousands of plant species across its rainforests and wetlands.
– Asunción, the capital, sits on the banks of the Paraná River and is one of South America’s oldest cities, founded in 1537.
What a way to end the school year! Our students wrapped up their Spanish studies with a deep dive into a country full of surprises. They leave this year with a better understanding of South American geography, culture, and language—and hopefully with a curiosity about the world that extends well beyond the classroom. ¡Hasta luego, Paraguay! 🇵🇾👋
