September, here we come!  Here’s what the 5th graders are doing in class this week:

Math: Students are taking their first math test of the year on Tuesday.  We have reviewed studying strategies and material, and will review one more time on Monday to prepare. On Wednesday, students will have an opportunity to correct their tests before we move on to the second unit of the year.  Later in the week, we will begin our second math unit on expressions, equations, and problem-solving strategies.

Language Study: We will be studying prepositions and objects of prepositions.  Students will use prepositional phrases to make their sentences more detailed.

Writing: Fifth graders will be taking one of their opinion prewrites and drafting it out into a detailed and organized paragraph. We will be learning about Thesis Statements and Sentence Fluency strategies.

Reading: After finishing up our folktale learning by discussing folktales with morals and folktales that explain natural phenomena, students will be choosing a unique folktale to analyze and create a brochure about.

Science: We will be finishing up the Layers of the Earth project and hanging up those informative posters!

Word Word: Students will be learning about phoneme, grapheme, syllable, and morpheme word analysis this week.  We will be discussing strategies for spelling challenging multi-syllabic words!
