We’ve got a busy week ahead of us!  We’re looking forward to Friday, when we’ll have the first lower school Town Hall of the year! Here’s what the fifth graders are up to….

Math: Last week, students learned the “draw a picture” strategy for solving word problems, which we will be using a lot over the next few days. Drawing pictures of how a word problem is asking us to manipulate numbers is a great way of figuring out which operations we need to use! We will wrap up our unit on problem solving this week with a study guide and test (Friday).

Language: This week’s focus is pronouns. We will learn about how pronouns replace nouns as subjects and objects of sentences to reduce repetitive use of words and phrases.

Writing: Students will wrap up their opinion paragraphs by revising, editing, and publishing. Afterwards, they will begin drafting their family folktales.

Reading: We will begin reading Alice in Wonderland this week.

Social Studies: After typing up their prehistory paragraphs, we will be learning about maps!

Science: We will conduct an experiment this week to see if convection currents in water will move objects placed on top of the water.  This simulates the scientific theory that convection currents in the Earth’s mantle move tectonic plates on Earth’s surface.

Word Work: It’s a spelling week this week!  We will have a spelling assessment on Friday!
