Small group learning!

We started off this week with our new star student, ReMi, getting to share all about herself with us! After Mrs. Cordel helped her share her beautiful poster she showed all of the students her special set of fake teeth and a cute hedgehog!

Everyday we do whole group learning when we come to our big carpet for our morning meeting. Here we do our morning message which includes calendar time, discussing anything special happening in our day, and always ends with several “challenge questions”. I try to fit in challenge questions that contain several concepts related to math and literacy. The past few weeks we have discussed patterns daily and I have noticed the students creating their own patterns and being so proud of them which makes me SO proud! I also incorporate the letter of the week in each morning message and we review a color word and a number or shape.

In addition to our whole group lesson and morning meeting, the students get pulled to work with either Mrs. Cordel or myself in a small group with students similar in age and ability as themselves. Today we worked on handwriting skills, and one-to-one correspondence. What we work on in small groups differs from day to day but the students enjoy being pulled aside in a small group and given a challenge!

Today we utilized small groups to help me find my 100 items for my bag for the 100th day of school tomorrow! I gave each small group of students a group of objects and asked them as a group to count out only 10 of their object and bring it to me. They then had to stand in front of the class and count out their object while placing it in my 100 day bag for tomorrow. They loved the activity and now I don’t have to find and count out all my 100 items by myself, haha!

Here are a few other photos from the past two days. I am so proud at how good the students are getting at writing their names and their friends’ names! We also have added a few new Valentine’s Day centers which were already a big hit today!
