This week, we are exploring the amazing job of the heart! We felt our own heartbeats and compared the shape of a real human heart to the Valentine’s Day hearts we often see, noticing how different they are. We also learned today that the heart can pump about 1.5 gallons of blood each minute—even though it’s only about the size of our fist! To help us understand just how much work that is, we filled containers with the same amount of water and gave students one minute to try transferring it from one container to another. Some students came very close. We were all amazed to discover that our hearts can do this important job even faster though, all day long!
