Wednesday, Jan. 18th in Early Learners!

This week I have been reminding our students that even though it feels warm, sunny, and rainy, it is still the season of winter!!  Throughout this month we will continue to talk about wintery, snowy weather and all the wonderful ways we can participate in winter activities and learn about the affects of cold weather.

Today we read the story, ‘Sneezy the Snowman’.  This tells the story of a snowman that just can’t seem to accept the fact that he needs to stay cold to stay frozen as a snowman!  Throughout the story, he insists on finding ways to warm up!!  The result…he melts!  This story made our Early Learners laugh as the snowman melts and is then put back together by the kind children in the story.  This story led us into a discussion of how and why snow and ice melts.

We experimented with white glue and shaving cream to create puffy paint! They watched carefully as we tested, measured, and stirred to make the right consistency.  They were amazed to watch these two ingredients transform into a white fluffy, puffy paint!

This is no ordinary paint!  Puffy paint requires holding a brush lightly while dabbing the mixture on paper.  Our Early Learners used their puffy paint to make their own snowman and then finish the statement, “My snowman melted because…”  Here are a few of their answers.

  • The sun came out
  • My snowman drank hot cocoa!
  • My snowman stood near a camp fire!
  • My snowman sat in a hot tub!
  • It became warm outside!
