Snow Day! Tuesday Jan. 31st, 2023

Colonel Johnston Elementary

I sure do miss my Early Learners!!  I hope everyone is doing well and staying healthy!  Here a few more snow day activities that I hope keep your child busy and engaged in creativity, learning and fun!

Our letter of the week is Mm!!  Practice tracing and writing the letter M!  Do you have macaroni noodles in the house?

  • Write a large letter M on paper.  Glue macaroni noodles onto the letter M.
  • Or, create beautiful artwork with macaroni!

Practice counting with money!  Our Early Learners practice counting everyday in class.  They count by ones, fives and tens!  Consider giving your student penny’s, nickels and dimes to practice counting!  They will love this hands on activity.  Set up a pretend grocery store where your child has the opportunity to use their money to shop!

M as in Marble!

First, prepare for marble painting by putting some paint in the muffin tin sections (or egg carton or small bowls). Protect your work surface with art mats or a tablecloth. place a sheet of paper in your shallow box, baking dish, or cookie sheet and set out the marbles and spoons. Next, drop your marbles in the paint and mix them around a bit to coat them fully. Transfer your paint-covered marbles to the paper in the shallow box/dish or cookie sheet. Now lift your shallow box and tilt it this way and that so the paint-covered marbles roll around and leave their little painty trails, creating interesting designs on the paper.

The main advantage of painting with marbles for preschoolers is that it’s an activity that helps work on hand eye coordination! Little ones have to use their hands to tilt the shallow box and strategically maneuver it so the marbles evenly disperse the paint onto the paper.

Here are a few more suggestions for you!

EASY TOILET PAPER ROLL BIRD FEEDER CRAFT:

Supplies:

  • Peanut Butter
  • Craft/Popsicle Sticks
  • Bird seed
  • Toilet paper rolls  (Pine Cones can also be used)
  • Twine

Directions:

1. Using a popsicle stick, cover outside of toilet paper roll (or pine cone) with peanut butter.

2. Roll the peanut butter covered toilet paper roll in the bird seed until covered.

3. Thread a piece of twine through the toilet paper roll and knot.

4. Hang where birds can enjoy.

SPARKLY WINTER PROCESS ART PAINTINGS

  • washable tempera paint, paint brushes
  • thick art paper
  • Epsom salt
  • washable white liquid school glue                                                                                                                                                 Begin by dolling out a few dollops of paint on your child’s paper.  You may want to use wintery colors, blues, whites, etc.   Begin painting by mixing the blue and white paint on the paper, making a swirling background for a snowy sky. Before the paint has a chance to dry completely, squirt on some white liquid school glue. Squeezing on the glue while the paint is still wet will cause it to react a bit with the paint as it dries, changing the blue paint under the glue to a purple hue. Finally, sprinkle some Epsom salt over the glue!

Have a warm, cozy, wonderful day!
