Candy Cane Exchange – Patterns

Since the first day of school, the Kindergarteners have been practicing pattern identification and continuation as part of our daily math and morning meeting routines. Recently, we delved deeper into the unit and learned how to name patterns, identify the pattern core, and compare different types of patterns. (AB, AAB, AABB, ABB, ABC, ABCD, and growing patterns) We even practiced creating our own and mimicking tricky pattern combinations. For example, the students utilized their newly acquired knowledge to construct winter hats. The students admired this activity as it allowed them to express their creativity by selecting from a variety of patterns. Additionally, students have been creating patterns with many different things. Like pattern blocks, winter erasers, connecting cubes, and links. Students have realized that patterns are everywhere!

Today, we held a “Candy Cane Exchange” in our classroom with the help of the families. Each student brought in a box of candy canes, resulting in various pattern combinations. After examining and analyzing the patterns on every candy cane, each student had an assortment of candy canes. The students then used the candy canes to create and record patterns, creating an exciting and engaging learning experience. Thank you, parents!!
