I say, “spi-” you say “-der”

Today we incorporated some fall festivities.  This morning we practiced fine-motor coordination by drawing and cutting out our own pumpkins.  After we put them on the green table, we decided that it looked like a pumpkin patch!

We got our calendar ready for Monday… it will be NOVEMBER!  We are going to continue working on calendar skills and building ease with manipulating/reading the calendar in a variety of ways.   There are several special things happening in November.  Here’s an overview of the things we marked on our classroom calendar.

  • Nov. 2: the 50th Day of School
  • Nov. 3: Election Day
  • Nov. 10: Fall Concert
  • Nov. 11: Veteran’s Day (& Free Dress Day… Red, White, Blue, or Camo)
  • Nov. 13: No School, Parent Teacher Conferences
  • Nov. 18: Kindergarten Field Trip (look for more info in your Friday Folder!)
  • Nov. 25-27: No School (Thanksgiving Break)

Today we had Art class and Music back-to-back.  Several pieces of Art will be coming home in their Friday Folder this afternoon!  I’m sure they would love to describe each masterpiece in detail to you!  During Music class, the scholars practiced some detailed components of the upcoming Fall Concert.  I’m so excited to see their performance!

We read the story The Little Old Lady Who Isn’t Afraid of Anything by Linda Williams.  The kids were not spooked at ALL!  They thought the story was hilarious.  After reading through the story, we used craft stick pictures to act out the story again.  Each person was in charge of a different part….

  • Avery: Little Old Lady “I’m not afraid of anything!”
  • Tenley: Shoes that go “Clomp Clomp”
  • Ben: Pants that go “Wiggle Wiggle”
  • Eli: Shirt that goes “Shake Shake”
  • Whit: Gloves that go “Clap Clap”
  • Lucas: Hat that goes “Nod Nod”
  • Brooklyn: Scary pumpkin that goes “Boo, Boo!”

We then talked about our own fears.  Some of us aren’t afraid of anything… just like the little old lady!  Some of us are afraid of spiders, monsters, the dark, thunder, or dark caves.  We did a quick survey to see who was afraid of spiders and then we analyzed the data.  We found out…

  • 3 people are afraid of spiders
  • 5 people are not afraid of spiders
  • 3+5=8
  • 5+3=8
  • 3 is less than 5
  • 5 is greater than 3

We wrote the data using tally marks and then drew our own pictures of scary spiders.

During Friday Free Choice we added a few extra activities into the mix for the scholars.  They had the opportunity to create their own design of the best costume for Miss Renfroe.  Some of the ideas included: ballerina, flower, army man, sports girl, and super girl!  We also created some cool slime!  We even laced string through paper plates to create our own spider webs.
