Bones are a very important part of our bodies. Students enjoyed learning about bones by reading aloud a nonfiction text, Bones, by Christine Dugan. Important concepts that we discussed from the text include:
- Bones are the frame for your body. If we didn’t have bones, our bodies would slump over like a doll.
- Bones protect important parts of your body. They keep some of your organs safe. The rib cage protects your heart, lungs, and stomach.
- Babies have 300 bones. Adults have 206 bones. As babies grow, some of their bones fuse (or join) together.
- When bones come together, they form a joint (like the wrist).
- Drinking milk gives our bodies calcium, which keeps our bones strong.
- We should protect our bones while we exercise. We can wear a helmet when we play sports or ride our bikes.
We have also been learning how to name some important bones in our body. The song “Macarena Bones” by Dr. Jean helps us remember the names. Ask your Kindergartener to help teach you the bones!
Lyrics: “Tarsal, tibia, fibula, patella… Femur, pelvis, ribs, and sternum…. Carpal, ulna, radius, and humerus… HEY! Kiss my cranium.”
Today we began our “human body map” project by cutting out and assembling our own skeletons. See the pictures below!
