“We wonder… about FRIENDSHIP” – this prompt began our inquiry lesson today. Students are somewhat familiar with this “wondering” process to generate questions. The teacher adds student quandaries as they brainstorm, and prompts with some sample questions. By reflecting on past experiences and interacting with various forms of media (videos, songs, books), students took a closer look at the characteristics of a friend. Today’s selected media included Be a Friend Song, What Makes a Good Friend?, Color Your World With Kindness, and Kindness Is Cooler, Mrs. Ruler. Throughout and after each content piece, students discussed their thinking with a small group of peers. At the end of the inquiry period, students created an illustration to represents different qualities of friendship – “Friendship Soup.” We will explore many of the student “wonderings” posed today over the next several weeks.
