Math:
This week, we continued in our geometry unit by learning how to classify two-dimensional shapes. Students explored the attributes of various polygons, including triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and octagons. We discussed how to identify shapes based on their sides, angles, and symmetry, and students practiced sorting and comparing shapes using mathematical vocabulary like parallel, perpendicular, right angle, and congruent.
Reading:
We wrapped up our unit on author Chris Van Allsburg. We analyzed themes, made inferences, and explored the author’s unique storytelling style and illustrations. We studied several of his books—including The Stranger, Jumanji, and The Sweetest Fig—and discussed how Van Allsburg uses mystery, imagination, and symbolism in his writing. Students also practiced writing thoughtful responses to literature using text evidence.
Science:
Students completed their biomes research and began working on their ecosystem projects. They investigated the unique characteristics of different biomes—such as the desert, rainforest, tundra, and grasslands—and explained how plants and animals adapt to their environments. We will showcase these projects at our upcoming Trimester Celebration on Monday!
Candy Salad:
Our candy salad was a sweet success! Thank you to everyone who donated treats. Students enjoyed creating their own mix and showing teamwork as they assembled the salad. We plan to enjoy the rest of it on Monday.
