Fun with Static

We started our second trimester’s science theme on electricity and magnetism by discussing the structure of atoms and how electrons move between materials, causing buildup of electric charge.  We also learned about how some materials lose or pick up electrons more easily than others.  Yesterday, we played with assorted types of paper, balloons, plastic bags, and any other materials we found around the room to try to build up static charges on everyday objects.  We used these static charges to attract and repel, making our hair stand on end, moving streams of water, and sticking balloons to every surface we could find.
