Comparative Folktales 101

Over the past few weeks, we’ve been using folktales to review literary elements like character, plot, setting, problem/solution, conflict, and moral.  Today, the students were challenged to make a chart of five folktales.  They were asked to compare the morals, types of characters included, and type of conflict.  The students were impressed by how many short stories they’ve already read this year.  We will read a few more next week as we discuss how folktales were commonly used to tell tales about why things are the way they are.  After this lesson, the students will have the opportunity to write their own folktales.  Get ready for some serious creativity!
