Another great week of fifth grade is in the books. We just started a number of fun projects today that we will carry into next week. I’m looking forward to posting some pictures of the final products! Here’s what we’re looking forward to:
Spelling – We’re starting out with our first real spelling rules next week. Students will be bringing Spelling Journals home in their backpacks – ask them what the rule of the week is!
Science – Students just finished up their posters of the layers of the Earth – they are amazing and they are hanging in our3/4/5 common space. We also just learned about convection currents within the Earth and will be performing an experiment to see if we can reproduce and observe how they move next week.
Social Studies – We did an activity today where the students brainstormed questions about life during the Ice Age and people’s movement over Beringia to North America. We discussed search engine strategies and finding reliable websites online. With this knowledge we will be researching those questions and using the answers to put together a collaborative and interactive project.
Math – We have been focused on finding the volume of rectangular prisms this week. Next week we will move on to finding the volume of irregular and compound solids.
Reading – We have read so many folktales! This week we began brainstorming and planning for writing our own folktales. Next week, we draft and revise them!
Writing – We have been working on prewriting strategies this week. Next week, we will work on outlines and begin rough drafting our first opinion pieces.
