Wrestling with Spelling

The fifth graders are really wrestling with some diverse and complex spelling rules this week!

Each spelling group starts off the week with a set of words that they are encouraged to sort by observed spelling patterns.  Afterwards, we analyze the pattern and discuss the “oddballs” (words that don’t follow the pattern – because there are a lot of those in the English language!)  The students have daily activities that they complete to think about and apply the pattern and learn about the definitions of the words.  We will end spelling weeks with a “Spelling Check” where students demonstrate that they know the spelling of the words they have worked with throughout the week  AND can apply their spelling rule to a few new words that were not on their list.
