Earthquake Resistant Buildings, and Jello

On Friday of last week, the students learned about how earthquakes damage structures.  We also watched a movie about a shake table.  It explained how these are used to test how diverse structures withstand earthquake-style shakes.

Yesterday and today, the students used their knowledge of earthquake resistant building techniques to design and build building models.  We used toothpicks, marshmallows, popsicle sticks, and tape.  Students had the opportunity to test to see how their buildings would stand up to an earthquake using our mini-shake tables (Jello!).  Then they redesigned and tried again!
