Building up To Electricity

In the second trimester, the 5th graders will spend their science time investigating electricity and magnets!

We have started our unit by cultivating some foundational knowledge about physical science.  We learned that all matter is made of atoms and about the structure and behavior of atoms.  Yesterday, students used a Nearpod assignment to learn about energy.  Students watched movies, interpreted diagrams, analyzed questions, and played with interactive digital activities to learn about the different forms of energy and how energy changes between these forms.  Examples include:  a lightbulb makes electrical energy into heat and light energy; our bodies turn chemical energy into heat and mechanical energy.

Tomorrow, we will have a refresher on what they learned last year about forces and motion.  Then, next week, we start off our discussions on electricity by talking about static charge (and seeing if we can stick balloons to the wall!).
