Wednesday is the International Day of Play! Here’s what we’re up to in fifth grade on the other days of school this week:
Writing: This is our last week of poetry. We will be writing the “Where I’m From” poems that students worked on gathering memories for over the weekend. We will also be reading poems by Maya Angelou, Langston Hughes, and Amanda Gorman. To wrap up this poetry unit, students will be assembling and publishing their own poetry anthologies.
Reading: Last week, we finished our first book club novels. This week, we are starting a new set of novels: Bridge to Terabithia, From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, and The Witch of Blackbird Pond. There will also be an optional additional bookclub novel for those kids who want to read and talk about Wonder.
Spelling/Grammar: Sentences! We will be discussing how to fix run-on and incomplete sentences. We will also discuss simple, complex, and compound sentences.
Science: We will be learning about magnets and magnetic fields. We will also begin working on a final trimester project – a circuit quiz board.
Social Studies – Spanish, French, Portuguese, and British explorers who explored North and South America. Students are presenting their explorer projects to inform and guide our discussions. Students are also writing newspaper-style articles about the explorers.
Math: Adding, subtracting and multiplying decimal numbers.
