Math Matching

Today in math class, the fifth graders applied their knowledge of working with fractions to figure out how to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators.  First, we reviewed what we already know about working with fractions – like how to add fractions with the same denominators.  Then, the students worked with a deck of cards that had different fraction addition and subtraction expressions on them.  They were asked to categorize the cards in different ways and discuss their categorization methods with a partner.  Thinking about the similarities and differences between the expressions helped the students think about the different ways we could try to solve them.  Lastly, we used diagrams to visually demonstrate how equivalent fractions can be used to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators.
