Iditarod and Dog Sledding

For the last two weeks 5th graders have been using the Engineering Design Process to create a dog sled for a race.  Their sled had to be fast and hold a lot of cargo.  We did some research on the Iditarod and how that first trip from Anchorage to Nome saved lots of lives.  They also listened to a book on Balto, one of the dogs that helped bring the medicine to Nome.

After the students finished their designs, we raced the sleds to determine the fastest sled.  I was very proud of how everyone worked hard and made improvements as needed.
