Let’s Classify Animals

Today in science class, the students used what they knew about various animals’ characteristics to work out a visual classification system.

They were given sticky notes with random animals on them.  Then, they had to place their animal on the board – closer to animals that had similar traits.  The goal for the project was to think about how and why scientists have developed classification systems to study life.

We have already talked about what characteristics all organisms have in common.  Next week, we will learn about the scientific classification system and some of the features of the major kingdoms and animal/plant phyla.
