Week of 4/3-4/7

It’s a short week this week!  There is no school Friday, 4/7 or Monday 4/10 for Home Stretch Holiday!  In the meantime, here’s what we’re up to:

Writing: Fictional narratives.  Students are learning about graphic organizers for fiction pieces. They will be organizing and drafting a story about getting locked in a shed (I’m anticipating some pretty creative escape stories!).  We will also be taking a famous story and writing it from another character’s point of view.

Reading: We are holding the final group meetings for our second group novel study!  We will be taking some time to read some nonfiction pieces and discuss discerning facts from opinions before starting our final novel of the year.

Spelling/Grammar – Students have been identifying homophones that are challenging for them.  Each student will have 20 homophones that they will be working with in their spelling journals this week.

Science: 5th graders are continuing work on their cell posters.  The posters are starting to take shape and looking colorful and informative!

Social Studies: We are working on our museum wall about the 13 British colonies in North America.  Students started their research today.

Math: We are working with coordinate grids and geometry for this unit.  We started by discussing positive and negative numbers and learning how to plot coordinate pairs on a coordinate grid.  We will move on to learning about lines, angles, and quadrilaterals later this week.

The Summit Preparatory School is a fully accredited, non-religious, private school offering a full-time seated independent education for students in Springfield, Ozark, Nixa, Rogersville, and the greater Southwest Missouri area.
