Week of 1/29-2/2

Here’s what the fifth graders are up to this week:

Writing: We’re continuing on with poetry.  We will be learning about specific types of poems like haikus, tankas, concrete poems, and limericks.  We will also talk about how to add rhythm and imagery to our poems.

Reading: We’re finishing up our first reading group novels!  The students have chosen new novels, which we will begin reading this week for our second round of reading groups!

Grammar/Spelling: It’s a grammar week.  This week, we will focus on sentences – types and structures.

Science:  Students will learn about magnets this week.  We will also begin talking about our final Trimester 2 science project.

Social Studies: Cabot, Vespucci, Balboa, Ponce de Leon, Cortes, Narvaez, and Coronado – European explorers of the Americas.  We will also discuss bigger concepts like types of governments and different historical interpretations of land ownership.

Math: Multiplying decimal numbers.
