Happy April! Can you believe it?! Here’s what we’re doing in the fifth grade classroom this week:
Writing: We are learning about compare and contrast essay structure. Students will be using this structure to write an essay comparing French colonies and Spanish colonies in North America (crossover with some social studies curriculum!).
Reading: Students are meeting with their reading groups for the last time this week! After their final meetings, they will be finishing reading on their own and starting a final project analyzing their novels.
Spelling/Grammar: Students will get personalized homophone lists this week for spelling practice. The fifth graders were amazed at how many homophones the English language contains (my list contains 110 sets – sometime sets contain 3! Sent-Scent-Cent.)
Science: Students are working on an informational poster to answer a question about cells.
Social Studies: Early English colonies in North America. We will learn about Jamestown and Plymouth colonies.
Math: Students are taking a Check today on adding/subtracting fractions, using line plots, and scaling numbers with fractions. We will use the rest of the week to review the check and work with some pre-algebra concepts like using variables.
