The life cycle of a butterfly, growing bean sprouts, and rain!

Receiving our caterpillars in the mail inspired us to learn about the life cycle of a butterfly! This morning, I split the students up into small groups and I gave each group sequencing cards and challenged them to collaborate together to put the cards in the correct sequence of the life cycle of a butterfly. What a great learning experience to get to read and learn about something and then get to watch it happen right before your eyes! We are so excited to watch our caterpillars turn into beautiful butterflies!

Yesterday after we checked on the progress of our caterpillars (they are growing BIG), the students were eager to water their beans! I called them over individually during center time and they made observations about how their beans are growing and then watered them. Many of the students had sprouts that could be seen already and some could see small roots growing in the soil! They were VERY excited by the developments!

This week we are learning about the letter R! The students created rain by finger painting on the letter R and then added rain clouds at the top of the letter. What a perfect art project to do right before a big storm!

Each morning after students finish their walk-in-work for the morning they grab their journals and create an entry. They draw a picture and we challenge them to write words under the picture. Many times they will choose to copy words they see displayed around the room. Other times they will attempt to sound out shorter words or will sometimes as Mrs. Cordel or me to write the word on a piece of paper that they can then copy from. They are getting great practice with writing and are getting more creative with their journal entries!
