Why This Story Should (Not) Be Banned

We all have opinions, and students are being encouraged to share theirs about one of the short stories we’ve read in the form of a 2-3 page review or satirical letter. In their reviews/satires, they will be analyzing two elements of the story, incorporating one outside source and the story itself as evidence to support their (real or satirical) opinions, and describing what audiences would like/dislike or be banned from reading the story.

To engage with your student, you could ask them:

  • what short story they are doing their project on,
  • if they are writing a review or satirical letter,
  • why they like/dislike the story (beyond it being the shortest one we read!),
  • what elements of the story they are analyzing, and
  • what adjectives they are using to avoid using “like” or “dislike” in their writing.

Because we have a shorter week due to the all-school service day on Wednesday, Fall Break on Thursday and Friday, as well as no classes on Monday for Parent-Teacher Conferences, we will continue working on this review next week as we further practice the research and formatting requirements.
