Students in American History to 1877 started the semester with some icebreakers to build comfort in the classroom. From here, we discussed basic elements of the syllabus and expectations for the semester, as well as students’ opportunity to take the course as dual credit through Missouri State. After a review of primary, secondary, and tertiary sources, as well as bias, we discussed when American history should begin. Many dates were thrown out, but ultimately we’re starting with the stories of indigenous Americans through various recorded narratives. This exercise gives students early practice in reading and analyzing primary sources, supporting a necessary skill for the year. In the coming weeks, we’ll discuss European arrival and add layers of sources, working to discern a more complete picture of those early interactions.
