Winter Poems

We have slowly began working with poetry and elements of figurative language. This week, students practiced their haiku writing skills by using a collection of pre-made lines made up of either 5 or 7 syllables. They worked with the lines to first count the number of syllables in the line, then form a haiku that makes sense. After creating at least two, several students then wrote their own haiku with a topic of their choice. These poems will be shared with you at conferences. Scroll down to read the winter-themed haiku poems. It’s interesting to see how students use the same lines in different ways to create completely different ideas in their poems.

Snow
by Samantha

Freshly fallen snow
Colder than Antarctica
Crystal white blanket

Tumbling from the clouds
Dots, like splatters of white paint
Landing on my nose

Swishing down the hill
Colder than Antarctica
Snowy, white frosting

Hail
by Matt and Raphael

Tumbling from the ground

Like a frozen cannonball

Icy cannons fly

Snow's Fears
by Raphael

Frozen cotton ball

Reluctant to come inside

Resting on rooftops

Prepare for War by Raphael

Giddy children wait

Sneaking, creeping to the ground

Pat it, pack it hard

Wind by Connor

Whistling winter wind

Like a grey wolf, the wind howls

Sliding on the ice

Blizzard by Estella

Covering the ground

Glimmering like a diamond

Swishing down the hill

Resting on rooftops

Silently fluttering down

Painting the trees white

Freshly fallen snow

Dots, like splatters of white paint

Lasting forever

Snow by Grace

Covering the ground

Delicate crystal snowflakes

Lasting forever

Icy cannons fly

Like a frozen cannonball

Soaring snowballs sail

Snowflake
by Tyler

Dazzling, dancing flakes

Dots, like splatters of white paint

Painting the trees white

Dog in the Snow
by Grace
Outside in the snow
No going outside in snow
Dogs in the snow, no!

The Fun Time
by Johnathan

Frozen solid children play

Sneaking, creeping to the ground

Soaring snowballs sail

Snow

Crystal white blanket

Snow
by Tyler

Dazzling, dancing flakes

Spinning, twirling, fluttering

Landing on my nose

Snow Day
by Connor

Crunching through the ice

Surprised by soaring snowballs

A snow day, hooray!

Untitled by Connor

Cheeks are rosy pink

Surprised by soaring snowball

A snow day, hooray!

Snow Day by Estella

Shivering with glee

Reluctant to come inside

Crunching through the ice

Frosty flakes fall down

Bundled children laugh, shriek, play

Cheeks are rosy pink

Snowy, white frosting

Resting on rooftops

Shining in the night.

The Tough Snow by Johnathan

Freshly fallen snow

Hard wind, sharper than a knife

Frozen to the core

Snowball Fight by Matt

Softly brush my face

like a frozen cannonball

Shivering with glee

Soaring snowballs sail

Bundled children laugh, shriek, play

Lasting forever

Snow Fight by Cyrus

Frozen to the core

Frozen solid children play

Soaring snowballs sail
