Winter Poems
We have slowly began working with poetry and elements of figurative language. This week, students practiced their haiku writing skills by using a collection of pre-made lines made up of either 5 or 7 syllables. They worked with the lines to first count the number of syllables in the line, then form a haiku that makes sense. After creating at least two, several students then wrote their own haiku with a topic of their choice. These poems will be shared with you at conferences. Scroll down to read the winter-themed haiku poems. It’s interesting to see how students use the same lines in different ways to create completely different ideas in their poems.
Snow
by Samantha
Colder than Antarctica
Crystal white blanket
Tumbling from the clouds
Dots, like splatters of white paint
Landing on my nose
Swishing down the hill
Colder than Antarctica
Hail
by Matt and Raphael
Tumbling from the ground
Like a frozen cannonball
Icy cannons fly
Snow's Fears
by Raphael
Frozen cotton ball
Reluctant to come inside
Resting on rooftops
