High School Mathematics

What’s with all the standards?

In Upper School math classes, assessment is done utilizing standards-based grading. Using a 4-3-2-1 scale, students’ demonstrated skills and understanding is measured:

4 – In-depth inferences and applications that go beyond what was taught

3 – No major errors or omissions regarding any of the information and/or processes that were taught.

2 – No major errors or omissions regarding the simpler details and processes

1 – A partial understanding of some of the simpler and more complex details and processes

By assigning these point values to student work, they are able to clearly see in which areas they completely grasp the material and in which areas more work is needed. Teachers are also able to tailor review and re-testing to the specific areas that students need.
