2D Shapes

Students were quick to identify many 2-dimensional shapes last week during an informal pre-assessment.  We are adding to this knowledge by learning how to count and identify lines of symmetry, sides, and vertices.  Center-based exploration this week will include geoboards, tangrams, and shape related data and graphing.  We’ve enjoyed read-alouds including Round is a Tortilla and Round is a Mooncake, both written by Roseanne Thong. Today, students worked independently to create “Shape Snowmen.” We also collected data as a class on our “Favorite Shapes” and created a bar graph to share the information.  Try going on a shape hunt in your home to find the following shapes: circle, ellipse, square, rectangle, rhombus, trapezoid, triangle, hexagon, and octagon.  After finishing this unit, we will begin learning the names and attributes of several 3D Shapes (Solid Figures).
