Opportunities in Upper School

This week, upper school students have had the opportunity hear from people outside of The Summit on a variety of topics.

Tuesday, high school students had the opportunity to learn more about the Greater Ozarks Center for Advancing Professional Studies (GO CAPS) opportunity for juniors and seniors. Students took the shuttle to three locations around Springfield and learned about the various strands offered. The first stop was the E-Factory, where students met with current GO CAPS students to learn about their business and IT strands.

Next, students visited Cox North to learn about the medical strand. Here, students were able to practice dissections, learn more about job shadowing, learn about capstone projects, hear how GO CAPS has benefited students interested in medicine, and discover the opportunities provided through this program. Two of our current juniors are involved with the medical strand and loving it.

Finally, students visited SRC on Division to learn about the education and engineering strands. Many Summit students came away from the field trip interested in the GO CAPS program. We had a great afternoon learning more about the GO CAPS program in Springfield and touring their different classrooms. Students (and parents) who are interested in learning more about this as an option can contact Mrs. Breckner. The applications for 2019/20 are open and can be found here.

Back at The Summit on Wednesday, Chief Judge Nancy Rahmeyer of the Missouri Court of Appeals took time out of her busy schedule to share with seventh and eighth grade students about the First Amendment. Specifically, Judge Rahmeyer taught students about two Supreme Court cases: Tinker v. Des Moines and Collin v. Smith. Both cases dealt with freedom of speech and the ways in which the Court protects those rights for Americans. Judge Rahmeyer also explained to students about a case Missouri courts dealt with after an event at a Lee’s Summit school raised questions about students’ rights of free speech. The judge spent time discussing current issues of freedom of speech in the media, bringing great relevancy into the classroom. Judge Rahmeyer’s presentation was valuable to students as they learn about the Early Republic and craft their “Free Speech, Free Press, Free Society” essays.
