Non-Fiction Breakout Boxes with 7th and 8th Grade

To put their skills to the test, the 7th and 8th graders (Yellow Team and Blue Team) in Language Arts worked in teams to build breakout box experiences. (A breakout box is similar to an escape room, except instead of getting out of a room, the team is trying to break into the box.) The students were set the task of building a box which required the solvers to read, break down, and analyze key points in non-fiction texts; students will be assessed on their ability to create puzzles which require thorough reading and thought.

In their teams, the students curated texts which worked together and built upon a topical theme for their Breakout experience. Ranging from The Universe to People who Persevered, the students found some wonderful articles that engaged their classmates.

Yesterday and today, the classes were able to test out the breakout boxes created by the Yellow Team. Early next week, Blue Team will set their boxes up to challenge their peers.
