Students in sixth grade took time this morning to share presentations with each other about traits of leadership. Each student was asked to choose five traits they believe strong leaders share, and then they identified how different people provide examples of these traits. Among their chosen examples were Abraham Lincoln, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, Jr., John F. Kennedy, Stephen Hawking, Hannibal Barca, and Alexander the Great. Traits included independence, humility, honesty, empathy, and integrity. This project arose out of conversations around Roman leadership during its time of empire. As we examine the stories of Julius Caesar and Caesar Augustus, students have pondered what a good leader looks like. We are also taking time to compare the government structure of Rome to more modern examples, critically examining the benefits and challenges of republics and democracies. This class should be really proud of their growing skills of research, analysis, and asking good questions!
